The Chattiest States in America

With fewer gatherings in person throughout the year, Americans talked on the phone 25% more often and calls lasted 15% longer in 2020, according to this report. For the second year in a row the CenturyLinkQuote team researched how much time Americans spent talking on the phone, texting, writing old-fashioned letters, and communicating by email to find out this year’s chattiest states.

Just as in our 2020 report, Nebraska was the chattiest state, its combined phone, email, and snail mail communication time going up from one hour and six minutes (1:06:00) to one hour and twenty-four minutes (1:24:00), well above the American average of 43 minutes per day.

On the other end of the spectrum, New Hampshire had the most reclusive residents, with only 19 minutes of total communication time per day, down from last year’s already low 31 minutes.

Check out the map below to see how much your state’s residents stay in touch by phone, email, and mail.

Interesting Findings

  • The roughly 43 minutes Americans spend communicating by phone, email, and mail per day adds up to roughly 265 hours a year. If Americans could get paid the federal minimum wage of $7.25 to chat, conversing would earn Americans an extra $1,921 (before taxes, of course).
  • Maryland is the nation’s second chattiest state, gabbing for an hour and three minutes per day—an increase of 8% from 2020.
  • Last year’s least talkative area, DC, is now the 13th chattiest, with a 300% increase in talk time between last year’s and this year’s.

Methodology

To see how much time Americans spend talking on the phone, texting, emailing, and mailing, the CenturyLinkQuote team analyzed data from the 2020 American Time Use Survey, collected between May 10 and December 31, 2020. To forecast our 2021 results, we also used historical data from the ATUS from the years 2015 to 2019.
